Neonatal resuscitation is a life-saving intervention that significantly reduces mortality and morbidity among newborns who experience birth asphyxia (WHO, 2024). Birth asphyxia accounts for nearly 24% of all neonatal deaths worldwide, and its prevalence is particularly high in low-resource settings, including Nigeria (UNICEF, 2024). Nurses, as primary caregivers during childbirth, must possess adequate knowledge and skills in neonatal resuscitation to ensure optimal outcomes (Adebayo & Danjuma, 2024).
Despite its importance, research suggests that gaps exist in nurses’ knowledge and proficiency in neonatal resuscitation, particularly in hospitals with inadequate training programs and limited access to neonatal care equipment (Oladele et al., 2024). In Maiduguri, Borno State, factors such as insecurity, healthcare worker shortages, and lack of resources may further hinder nurses' preparedness in handling neonatal emergencies (Bello & Musa, 2024).
This study aims to assess nurses’ knowledge of neonatal resuscitation techniques in Maiduguri hospitals, identifying potential gaps and recommending training interventions.
High neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria can be attributed, in part, to inadequate neonatal resuscitation skills among healthcare providers (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). In Maiduguri, where healthcare facilities are strained due to conflict and resource limitations, nurses often work under challenging conditions, which may affect their ability to deliver timely and effective neonatal resuscitation (Muhammad et al., 2024).
Despite existing guidelines on neonatal resuscitation, there is limited empirical evidence on the level of knowledge among nurses in Maiduguri hospitals. This study seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by evaluating nurses’ competency levels and identifying areas for improvement.
The study focuses on nurses working in neonatal and maternity units of selected hospitals in Maiduguri, Borno State. Limitations may include self-reported data, which could introduce response bias.
